You Think You Know, But You Have No (Eye)dea

It’s time for kiddos all around the country to head back to school. So to celebrate, we thought we’d fill your head with some “eye knowledge.”

We’ve always made it a point to talk about how incredible the eye is, but we thought we’d devote a post to these crazy, random eye facts. Some of them will blow your mind. Some of them you will find hard to believe. So just to keep our “street cred” we’ll provide sources for the nuggets of information that we deem “extra mind blowing”.

So here we go!

  1. The human eye can distinguish about 10 million different colors.
  2. Some women can have a genetic mutation which causes them to see millions of more colors.
  3. People with blue eyes have a higher alcohol tolerance. (Don’t believe it?)
  4. If the human eyewas a digital camera it would have 576 megapixels.
  5. All blue eyed people can be traced back to one person who lived near the Black Sea almost 10,000 years ago. (Check out the story)
  6. We spend about 10% of our waking hours with our eyes closed, blinking.
  7. Goldfish can’t close their eyes as they have no eyelids.
  8. An Ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.
  9. Researchers have successfully used the game TETRIS to treat “lazy eye” in adults. (Read about it here.)
  10. Albert Einstein’s eyes remain in a safe box in NYC. (Lay your eyes on this!)
  11. Your eyes can get sunburned.
  12. Black lemurs are thought to be the only primates, besides humans, to have blue eyes.
  13. Chameleons can move their eyes in two directions at the same time.
  14. Bees have five eyes.
  15. The space between your eyebrows is called Nasion.
  16. Blue eyes tend to be more sensitive to light.
  17. The eye of a giant squid can measure the same as a volleyball ball.
  18. Humans and dogs are the only two species known to seek visual clues from another’s eyes. And dogs only do it with humans.
  19. Dolphins sleep with one eye open. (Take a peek.)
  20. Some lizards squirt blood out of their eyes as protection against predators.
  21. Cats have three eyelids.
  22. It is impossible to sneeze with the eyes open.
  23. Ommatophobia is the fear of eyes.
  24. Eigengrau (“brain gray”) is the coloryour eyes see in total darkness.
  25. Night vision goggles are greenbecause the human eye can differentiate more shades of green than any other color.
  26. Carrots don’t make your eyesight better. That was a lie from the British to cover up their technology from the NAZI during WWII. (Say what!?!)
  27. U2 singer Bono wears sunglasses all the time because he suffers from glaucoma, an eye condition.
  28. Your eyebrows renew themselves every 64 days.
  29. It is estimated that only 2% of all humans have green eyes, making it the rarest eye colour.
